Common Auto Insurance Questions
What is auto insurance?
Auto insurance is a contract between you and the insurance carrier to indemnify you for losses due to an automobile accident. In the event of a loss the carrier steps in to pay for the loss up to the policy limits.
How does auto insurance work?
In the event of a loss, the carrier will assign a claims adjuster to review the facts and circumstances of the accident. If you are determined to be liable then the adjuster will pay for the other parties damage and personal injury up to the policy limits. If you are not at fault then the adjuster will send a denial letter to the other party. If you have collision coverage the carrier will pay for damage to your vehicle. Once the repairs are made and the bills are settled then the adjuster will subrogate the other parties insurance provider. In other words, the adjuster will seek reimbursement from that carrier.
What does auto insurance cover?
Auto insurance covers the following:
- Liability insurance consists of two parts,
o Bodily injury liability coverage: Pays for medical bills, pain and suffering and death benefits.
o Property damage liability coverage: Pays for physical damage to property of others which may include cars, signs, telephone poles and houses.
- Collision insurance: Pays for damage for your car.
- Comprehensive insurance: Pays for all damage not considered collision, for example, theft, weather, fire, vandalism and hitting a deer.
- Medical payments coverage: Pays for medical bills as a result of injuries sustained by you and your passengers up to an internal limit regardless of fault.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance: Pays for your injuries or damages as a result of the negligence of someone else who has no or low insurance coverage. In the case of underinsured liability your carrier pays the difference between what the other person has and what you carry.
To further customize your policy the following elective coverages may be added:
- Roadside assistance
- Rental car reimbursement
- Custom parts coverage
- Replacement cost vehicle coverage
- Vanishing deductibles
- Gap insurance
Is auto insurance required?
Under Louisiana law, you must carry liability coverage on any automobile you own. This coverage pays for property damages or personal injury for which you may be legally responsible, up to your policy’s dollar limits.
In Louisiana, each vehicle is required to have 15/30/25 liability limits. Those limits provide payments of:
$15,000 for bodily injury to one person,
$30,000 for bodily injury to more than one person in a single accident, and
$25,000 coverage for damage to someone else’s vehicle or other property.
If you have financed your vehicle, you also may be required to carry collision, comprehensive and gap coverage.
Although only the minimum auto insurance coverage is required by law, we may be able to advise you on coverage amounts, deductibles and optional coverages.
